Breaking: Oyebanji Wins Ekiti Governorship Poll

All Progressives Congress (APC) nominee Mr Biodun Oyebanji was declared the winner of Saturday’s Ekiti gubernatorial election.

Prof Oyebode Adebowale, Elections Officer of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), declared the winner and said Oyebanji cast a total of 187,057 votes to win the election.

He said Oyebanji upheld the law and was therefore declared the winner. In a statement, Adebowale said:

“That I, Prof. Oyebode Adebowale, hereby certified that I am the returning officer of the Ekiti 2022 Governorship Election held on June 18.

“That Biodun Oyebanji, the candidate of APC, having satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby declared the winner and returned,”

The INEC Election Officer, who is also Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, said given the breakdown of the total votes obtained by the participating political parties, Mr Segun Oni, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) candidate, scored 82. 211 to come second.

According to him, others were the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Chief Bisi Kolawole, polling 67,457; Match (A) scored 166; African Action Congress (AAC) 409; All Progressives Grand Alliance, (APGA) got 17, while the Action Democratic Congress (ADC) got 141 votes.

The Action Democratic Party (ADP) also scored 5,597; Allied Peoples Movement (APM) -290; Labor Party (LP) received 195 votes; The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) scored 529 and the National Rescue Movement (NRM) 347.

The rest were Young Progressive Party (YPP)-618; The All Peoples Party (APP) reached 1,980 and the Zenith Labor Party (ZLP) 282; People’s Redemption Party (PRP) interviewed 856.

According to the INEC Elections Officer, the total number of registered voters was 989,224, accredited voters 363,438, valid votes 351,865 and invalid votes 8,888.

However, Ekiti South West Local Government Collation Officer Prof Gbolagade Jonathan said there were problems with ballot withdrawals in Ward 6, Units 5 and 7.

As Jonathan received his reports, he said they were about to sort through the results when gunmen stormed the affected units and began firing sporadically, prompting people to run to safety while carting away the ballot boxes in the process.

He explained that the two entities concerned had a total number of accredited voters of 266 and 128 respectively.
